There is a need in some applications, such as debian-cd, to pack files into
volumes. The size of filesystem metadata on a ISO 9660 volume is not easily
predictable so this requires feedback from the filesystem creator. To support
such applications, there should be a function in libisofs to calculate the
on-disk size of an iso_volume without actually preparing the image.

This appears to have been implemented in 0.6.40:

* New API call iso_write_opts_set_will_cancel() avoids start of write thread
  and is to be used to inquire the future image size.
