Description Eric S. Raymond 2004-07-04 15:03:14 UTC
I just upgraded from Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2. On the first boot
following upgrade, kudzu requested confirmation to configure a newly attached
kweyboard, even though my keyboard had not changed or been disconnected.

When I logged in, X gave me a popup window saying the following:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problems.

X server version data:
The X.Org foundation
60700000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
 - the result of xprop -root | grep XKB
 - The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here they are:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc105", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc105", "us", "", ""

 layouts = [us]
 model = pc105
 overrideSettings = false
 options = []

I am aware that this may well be symptom of a Fedora bug. The reason I am
addressing it to the X crew is that the diagnostic message is massively
unhelpful. It gives me no clue what further tests I might perform to
narrow down the problem. This should be fixed.

this is assuredly a dupe of bug 472. but yes, the error message is cryptic,
especially since this particular misconfiguration is both common and trivial for
the user to fix.
Comment 2 Adam Jackson 2004-07-05 09:40:08 UTC
changing assignment, this isn't an xserver bug.
