Experiencing this on numerous kernels, up to and including 3.16.0. It is making the system unusable. The primary display is hooked up via DisplayPort.

Sometimes one is able to get the desktop back by sending a hangup signal to the WM, often times not.

I run fedora 20 in Asus UX31A and I cannot recover from login window because this error. There are some fix for this, patch or somthing like that?

I presume the original report is about external display port, and your problem is with the laptop panel. Let's keep this one about the external display port.

Martin, please attach full dmesg with drm.debug=0xe module parameter all the way from boot to the problem, running a recent kernel.
Comment 4 Martin Andersen 2014-09-11 08:58:12 UTC
Currently running 3.17.0-994-lowlatency #201409042205 – although this issue has not popped up with this kernel build (yet). Either a previous commit fixed it, or the failure condition hasn't occurred for some reason.

I'll update once I have more info.

Hoping this is fixed! Martin, please re-open if not.
