In Telepathy 1, we resolved this by deleting the --disable-debug option. Having a build-time configuration that none of the developers will ever actually test, and that makes bug reports useless, in order to reduce on-disk footprint slightly, does not seem like the route to happiness.

Patches welcome (either to fix the build with --disable-debug, or to delete that build option).

Until/unless there is a patch, I would suggest working around this by changing the Gentoo packaging metadata to never pass --disable-debug, regardless of "use flags" or whatever.
