vdpauinfo output

When running hwdec=vdpau and vo=opengl in mpv, my GPU fans get louder than normally. When using hardware acceleration in Windows, my fans are not going this loud.

The output of vdpauinfo is in the attachment. The radeonsi driver is used, and the readeonsi vdpau driver.

My graphics chip is a R9 280x, using the radeonsi drivers and using radeonsi vdpau. Is this a driver issue or a mpv issue?

Btw, I already filed a bug at the mpv github, but they pointed to here.

Hi, Robin
How about opengl apps(real games or 3d-bench), fan is silent or noisy? How high is gpu temp when you watch films?
Could you tell which ver of linux/mesa do you use?

In linux 3.20 will be huge patchset for fan adjustment. In my case fan became silent, almost for ever. You can grab it from Alex's tree:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/linux/?h=drm-next-3.20

If you could, just test it :) It really may help.

PS.For future use, if you want be noticed, better use more_problem_specific categories like (in this case) mesa/driver/radeonsi or dri/drm/radeon.
libva/vdapu has nothing to do here because you don't use it and vdpau is part of opengl driver.
If you want, you always may change things in your bug raport like: product; component; hardware etc.

Hi Arek,

First of all, I'm sorry for filing this bug in the wrong category.

My kernel version is: x86_64 Linux 3.18.6-1-ARCH

And yes, my fans also get loud on 3D games etc. So maybe this problem isn't specific to the VDPAU implementation.

xf86-video-ati version: 7.5.0
Mesa version: 10.4.5

I will try the patches from Alex's tree, thanks for notifying me. The results will be reported back here.

P.S.

The next version of the Linux kernel will be 4.0 instead of 3.20, from what I've heard recently. Nice!

Btw, Do I have to provide the binary blobs for the firmware of my radeon card? Or is it already in the git repository?

You can grab ucode from Alex's repo:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/radeon_ucode/?C=M;O=D
But there is nothing new since summer 2014 so your distribution should be up to date enough.
