I am writing from a machine with a monitor that uses VGA cable. xrandr shows only 1024x768 as max resolution but the monitor supports 1680x1050

# xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA-2 connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.00*
   800x600 60.32 56.25
   848x480 60.00
   640x480 59.94
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis

I could not reboot with log_buf_len=1M kernel flag, but let me know if you think it is needed to get a better dmesg log.

It appears all we get are those modelines from EDID. You can add your own custom ones if you like.

Okay but it's an "hack around"

I have no longer access to the affected machine, nor I had any feedback from component developers.
I close the bugreport as wontfix
