32-bit Lubuntu 14.04 LTS is used for testing.
Package - http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/xdg-utils

xdg-open does not open URL, e.g.
xdg-open http://digi.ee/

Workaround seems to be defaulting locale to US English:
LC_ALL=C xdg-open http://digi.ee/

Therefore also all other applications fail open URLs properly.

Looks like a dup of bug #34915 which was fixed long ago, shortly after 1.1.0-rc1 was released,

   * xdg-open cant open some valid urls if URL doesnt match existing
   filename (BR34915).  Thanks to Leho Kraav.

I'd suggest you ask your distro to update or backport the fix.
