This is with openSUSE 10.2 (i586) with xdg-utils-1.0.1-7 running under KDE
(kdelibs3-3.5.5-45.2).

Actual result:
> xdg-mime query filetype *avi
Microsoft

Expected:
video/x-msvideo

kfile *avi returns:
rho.avi: AVI-Video (Microsoft) (video/x-msvideo)
-- /dev/shm/rho.avi --------------------------------------

looks like it works now with latest cvs (tested on kde4/fedora 13).
