Unfortunately /sys/class/drm/card0/error is a 0 bite file.

dmesg is above.

I am also getting errors of synaptics (touch pad) firmware not loaded / missing at this time.

/sys/class/drm/card0/error is a virtual file - it does not have a size until you read it. Please install the latest kernel you have available, and "cat /sys/class/drm/card0/error | bzip2 > error.bz2" following the hang.
