Can you check that the font you're seeing is indeed DejaVu in a text editor? On the screenshots it looks like Arial to me. Created attachment 18555 [details]

I chose "Sans Bold" in Ubuntu Hardy. I'm assuming it will be DejaVu? (msttcorefonts is indeed installed in my system.)
Select DejaVu Sans, the "Sans Bold" on the font selector button isn't DejaVu. It should be wider in DejaVu. Yeah, it was Arial. Sorry. And, apparently, a bad .fonts.conf. Until I deleted the old one, I couldn't even choose DejaVu Sans - when I pressed okay, it said Arial.
