I think Weston upstream might be going the opposite direction, as per our agreed scope of the Weston project: being a friendly DE is a non-goal. That's why I think this probably won't be implemented in upstream Weston. The idea is to try and get libweston up to a usable state, and then third party compositors based on libweston can provide a friendly DE. I believe it is more likely that we actually remove the multiple workspaces feature from Weston than enhance it.
