After the hangs, the system is nearly unusuble due to a high CPU-consumption of the Xorg process. After updating to the newest driver (for Ubuntu users: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers), the hangs have resolved. Thanks for your help!
