Opening a specific PDF in evince results in a weird font rendering or substitution for random characters making it completely unreadable. In MuPDF it renders correctly. I didn't try other engines. I'd like to provide the PDF, but I don't want to upload it publicly. Could those interested just respond to this issue and I'll send the PDF directly to your emails. Thank you for understanding.
does okular render it correctly?

Sorry for replying so late (my live got a bit too complicated back then). Unfortunately I can't test it anymore in Okular as I don't have the PDF any more. I believe you can close the Gitlab issue (I do not have an account in the new Gitlab tracker).

Sorry for the fuss. I found the file. Here are my current findings. a) No, Okular 18.08 can't display it at all (gives an error window immediately - see the attachment). b) Evince 3.28.2 still displays garbled font (see the attachment). c) MuPDF renders the PDF more or less correctly, but outputs warnings about font issues (see the attachment).
