Dead keys does not work on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.
However I set the Hungarian layout with dead key layout, dead keys not working.
For example I pressed AltGr+2, it produce ˇ sign again, it does not work as dead key with no one of keys. I tried AltGr+Shift+2, the result is the same.

Could you please try using xev utility and press those keys. What do you see?
