Description Dominique Bontemps 2007-03-30 05:15:58 UTC
Several times, but not each time, X freezes when kdm starts, and I get a black screen. Alt-Ctrl-Delete does nothing, and I can only push the power button.
It seems it's a new bug of xorg 7.1.0.

I use a debian etch system :
linux kernel 2.6.18-4-686
xorg 7.1.0-15
xserver-xorg-video-i810 1.7.2-4

I have an Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device.

In /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

Error in I830WaitLpRing(), now is -1580586138, start is -1580588139

same issue here, also with an Intel 82845G/GL [Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated
Graphics Device but with current xorg 7.3. Currently using driver "i810" with 16bit color as there seems to be an even bigger issue with this chip in "intel" driver (LCD reports "out of range").
Funny thing about this: When I boot into RC3 an then init 5, everything works. When I boot directly into RC5, cursor is shown, than scrren goes blank.
Error from Xorg.0.log (for complete details see attached Xorg.0.log an xorg.conf):

I have the same problem with xorg-server-1.4.0.90 and xf86-video-intel-2.2.0.
Slackware-12.0 /plus some updates from -current)

The cards works ok in 24 bit mode (but no DRI support here)
When trying to run it in 16 bit mode with DRI support, X just hags leaving garbage on the screen. Relevant log entry:

X freezes upon startup when doing a COLD BOOT (using DRI).

System: ubuntu hardy/8.04
- hardy alpha 4 (fresh harddisk installation) && apt-get upgrade
- Chipset: Onboard Intel Corporation 82830 CGC (i830M)
- xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.2.0.90-2ubuntu2
- linux-image-generic Version: 2.6.24.7.7

Only starting into an older linux on the same machine (with dri enabled, playing with glxgears), then WARM BOOT (reboot) into ubuntu works.

Same behaviour on SuSE 11 alpha1 and on Ubuntu gutsy/7.10 (since updates of Jan/2008).

Logs and whole story (short - i830M):
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/192088

(long - i845 / i830M):

Comment 13 Axel Pospischil 2008-02-17 12:16:14 UTC
Cloned this bug, because my problem is for i830M chipset, "i810" AND "intel" driver, which might be another problem: See bug #14528.

Reopened - unfortunetly changed to verified (I am new to bugzilla).
Comment 15 unggnu 2008-02-25 15:24:34 UTC
I can confirm this on a Gericom Laptop with i845 chipset.
"VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device [8086:2562] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA])"
But since the Intel driver didn't work because of Bug #11598 I have used the i810 driver which has the same problem that it freezes often after cold boot.
I can't test it right now since I didn't own the laptop but according to the Ubuntu bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/151044 it happens with the working Intel driver too.
Comment 16 Gordon Jin 2008-02-25 19:15:52 UTC
I'm closing this aging bug as the original report is against i810 driver, which has not been supported.

All, please try the latest intel driver (git or 2.2.1) and open new bugs for the issues.
