Description jabog6 2018-08-24 20:53:45 UTC
After installing ubuntu 18.04, unable to boot normally. Boot screen (with "Ubuntu" logo) flickers, intermittent "checklist" flickers on screen, and appears to be stuck (i.e. same messages repeat endlessly). Flicker is too quick for my eyes to register what the messages are.

Tried several flavours of ubuntu, as well as linux mint, with the exact same results.

Current workaround is to press shift key and boot in recovery mode. Everything then boots normally. Have to do this at every boot.

uname -m: x86_64

uname -r: 4.15.0-32-generic

Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon, 3.8.8

Acer Aspire S3 (laptop)
  Intel i3-2377M

Please try to reproduce the error using drm-tip (https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm-tip) and kernel parameters drm.debug=0x1e log_buf_len=4M, and if the problem persists attach the full dmesg from boot.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I don't know how to use drm-tip. I
think I can figure out how to edit the kernel parameters.

If you can provide more detailed instructions, I would much appreciate it.

Reporter, you can build your own kernel depending on the distribution you are using.
For example for Ubuntu instructions are here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel

If still occurs send the full dmesg from boot as requested in the bug above.

No feedback from more than a month.
Closing as resolved works for me.

Please re-open if issue persists with latest drm-tip https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm-tip

Send dmesg from boot with kernel parameters drm.debug=0x1e log_buf_len=4M
