Yeah, ilk can die in this fashion. We tried quite hard to reset the GPU and it didn't recover; so let's hide under a rock.
After discussing with Chris, this a known issue with the HW from which we try to recover, but don't always manage to do. However this happens rarely and has little impact, so we are not going to fix it.
