This is reported by a Ubuntu user in Launchpad bug 110124: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-i810 This is happening on feisty gold with dimension e520. onboard intel gmx3000 using default i810 driver steps to reproduce: After installation switch to a virtual console from X (ctrl-alt-F1-F6) then switch back to X (alt-F7) screen will go blank white, and have not been able to recover X at this point without reboot. I have attempted ctrl-alt-bkspace and booting to runlevel 1 and then back to runlevel 3 can work around by setting to vesa driver instead in xorg.conf connected monitor(s) are dell 1707FP, E156FP, 2007FPW a work around is confirmed by adding (Option "VBERestore" "True") to this i810 device section in xorg.conf The latest intel video driver, 2.0.0, (which is called intel_drv rather than i810_drv for versions later than the included 1.7.4), works fine without the workaround. The 2.0.0 driver no longer depends on the video BIOS, apparently.
We recommend the use of the new native modesetting drivers rather than the old ones that rely on the BIOS. No further development is planned on the 1.7.4 line...
