Sun provides a protocol called JNLP (or Java Network Launching Protocol) which allows one to launch Java applications over the network using a simple XML file. The file ends with .jnlp, and it's mime type is application/x-java-jnlp-file. A good text description would be "Java Network Launched Application", or some such. The files don't seem to have a proper DOCTYPE or XML name space. However, the root element is "jnlp". They can have a XML prolog.
