Description Christian Henz 2007-08-30 02:40:48 UTC
(I originally reported this against kdm in the Debian BTS, but I have since found out that it also happens with xdm and plain startx, as well as icewm instead of kde.)

To recap:

When first starting X, the font in the kdm login screen looks too big. After logging in, the font on the desktop/menus look too big. When logging out and returning to the kdm login screen, the font size looks correct. It stays that way until the X server is restarted.

Original report/logs are here:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=432598

Distro: Debian unstable
Graphics HW: Intel G965
Driver: Intel 2.1.1
Xorg: 7.2 / 1.3.0

As it turns out, this issue is related to X choosing the wrong mode
when first starting (kdm). Subsequently, even after setting the correct
mode (via xrandr), font sizes are not what they are supposed to be.

I now force the correct mode with a Modeline and PreferredMode in
xorg.conf, which seems to fix the font problems as well.

Same here. In gnome and kde the font is ok, but in fluxbox, enlightenment, kdm, gdm the font is too big.
A versions ago this problem don't happened.

From looking at the Debian bug, I see this on one :

screen #0:
  dimensions: 1280x1024 pixels (338x203 millimeters)
  resolution: 96x128 dots per inch

and this on the other :

screen #0:
  dimensions: 1280x1024 pixels (338x270 millimeters)
  resolution: 96x96 dots per inch

So this is basically randr not updating the screen dimensions when changing the modes. This is probably a duplicate of another bug. If so, I'll find out later.

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not obviously still valid. Please file a new report if you continue to experience issues with a current server.
