I want to report that the laptop display of macbooks is not reported as such. In https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492888 it was stated that this is a hal problem.

Software versions:
Kernel: 2.6.23.1-mactel
Hal: 0.5.9.1
udev: 115

The issue is fixed now. The problem was that my distribution (Gentoo) shipped hal without the USE-flags --with-macbook and --with-macbookpro (the first one was needed in my case). I've enabled them and now everything works fine.
