Description Oliver Henshaw 2007-12-04 09:19:16 UTC
Many of the modelines autodetected for my monitor for Xorg are inappropriate. For example, the 1280 * 960 setting is cramped into a box into the middle of the screen. The 1024 * 768 modelines are better, but the highest frequency one is shifted slightly to the right and lower frequencies sometimes cause the monitor to whine when large expanses of colour are on the screen.

In the past I've made do by adjusting the monitor's settings so that the modeline chosen by xorg fits the screen, but I'd rather sort out the problem this time round. And being able to use the highest available resolution would be nice.

As an additional data point, the closed nvidia driver seemed to do a better job of picking modelines than nv on a previous Fedora Core 6 install.

There is no xorg.conf set. According to the pamphlet that came with this monitor, this is a CTX VL700 - but xorg identifies it as a model 5370.

Is this bug still an issue for you with newer versions of xserver? Does it also occur on vesa?
Comment 3 Corbin Simpson 2011-09-14 13:32:44 UTC
xf86-video-nv has been officially unmaintained for a bit now, and we are closing all -nv bugs. If your problem was not addressed, and -nv is still broken, please try xf86-video-nouveau. Thank you.

For posterity: I also observed this problem with a radeon rv280 card but I got rid of my CTX monitors over a year ago. It's possible they are still intact and in circulation, but in any case I can't test this anymore.

IIRC this was still an issue with nouveau, for what little it's worth.
