Evince 2.20.2 using Poppler 0.6.2 and Cairo 1.4.12 is very slow to render this PDF, Xpdf have no such problem.

I can confirm splash backend is several times faster in this document than cairo backend.

Looks like a cairo issue that has been already fixed. It takes less than a second now (~0,7) to render with current cairo (git master).
