The problem application is /usr/lib/hal-runner: it somehow tells my CD drive to stop playing audio at random intervals (making listening to music impossible). I confirmed the problem application by: 1) symlinking "hald-runner" to an unusual app so "hald" could run alone, 2) killing "dbus-daemon", 3) killing "hald-addon-..." programs I am using: - SuSE Linux 10.1 32-bit, KDE 3.5.1, hal 0.5.8_git20061106, udev 085 and Kernel 2.6.16.13

My optical device is a "Matshita UJDA760 Combo DVD/CDRW" drive, if that helps. I notice the bug only occurs when KDE interacts with HAL and creates an "Audio CD" icon on the desktop. When the icon is present AND "hald-runner" is loaded, CD audio playback fails after an unspecified period of time. If the "Audio CD" icon fails to appear for whatever reason (sometimes KDE goes wrong) then the bug cannot be reproduced.
I think there may be a conflict between my version of KDE and the Hal daemon. If anyone could test this bug with a newer KDE but install the version of Hal that I am using, that would show whether the issue is a KDE bug or a Hal bug. Thanks.
Replacement optical drive resolved this issue. Suspect faulty optical drive and not HAL to blame? FYI, Matshita UJDA760 Combo DVD/CDRW is integrated in some Acer Aspire 1360 series laptops, in case anyone wants to verify this bug.
HAL is in maintenance mode - no new features are added. All future development focuses on udisks, upower and other parts of the stack. See Software/DeviceKit for more information.
