symptoms: X server will reach 100% cpu. mouse input will continue to work, however no mouse pointer animations keyboard does not work (num lock does not toggle) usually not able to get to a tty. if I can the screen is very very dim as if vid card settings are corrupt. if I max the monitor settings I can barely see the tty. no commands from this tty will fix it and requires a reboot to correct. logging in from other machine ... I have tried to go from runlevel 3 (current when happens) to 5 and back to 3 to try and reset but no good. ctrl+alt+backspace does NOT kill the x server. I leave my machine on 24/7 and this happens once every three weeks. I don't see a pattern in what I do that triggers this. Is there anything I can do next time this happens that will provide you with more info? HTH
We need a lot more information to be able to help. Your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and descriptions of things that have triggered this state would be good.
While preparing a problem report for OpenBSD and searching for more hints, I found this (and a few similar looking reports that strayed a bit off from what I am witnessing), so it seems that this is a genuine Xorg issue, not specific to OpenBSD, and all that. Maybe I can help with some additional information. Synopsis: Xorg process at 100% CPU + broken video Environment: OpenBSD 3.8-current/i386 as of two days ago, see dmesg below Description: When "it" happens, the X display freezes but the mouse still works while its cursor doesn't change anymore (e.g. a |-like text input cursor will stay like that whether it hovers over a text input box or not.) It is no longer possible (or at least visible) to switch to the text console. Programs currently running under X11 continue to work (seemingly) in the background, and the computer stays responsive: ssh logins are still possible and work there is not impaired (much) at all. Top(1) then shows the Xorg process using as much CPU as it can get. It is not possible to kill it with a SIGTERM, a SIGKILL is required. Once it is dead, X11 apps die as well and it returns to the xdm login screen. Going to the text console is still not possible. Logging back in (xdm) immediately makes Xorg spin again -- a reboot is necessary to get rid of the effect. (It looks like the hardware is kept in a bad state.) When rebooting, it doesn't go briefly into text mode as usual either. Comparing Xorg log files between "XDM login with spinning Xorg" and a successful/clean login, shows the following: "diff -u broken-X-log working-X-log", and I was in the process of updating to -current as of today, hence the different "Current operating system" lines that definitely have no meaning in this matter: --- Xorg.0.log.old Tue Dec 6 11:44:59 2005 +++ Xorg.0.log Tue Dec 6 12:27:48 2005 @@ -1,13 +1,12 @@ (--) checkDevMem: using aperture driver /dev/xf86 (--) Using wscons driver in pcvt compatibility mode (version 3.32) -(WW) xf86AcquireGART: AGPIOC_ACQUIRE failed (Device busy) (WW) GARTInit: AGPIOC_INFO failed (Device not configured) X Window System Version 6.8.2 Release Date: 9 February 2005 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.8.2 Build Operating System: OpenBSD 3.8 i386 [ELF] -Current Operating System: OpenBSD rain.jolly 3.8 GENERIC#395 i386 +Current Operating System: OpenBSD rain.jolly 3.8 GENERIC#397 i386 Build Date: 05 December 2005 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.X.Org to make sure that you have the latest version. @@ -15,7 +14,7 @@ Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting, (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational, (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. -(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Tue Dec 6 11:44:29 2005 +(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Tue Dec 6 12:16:56 2005 (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" (==) ServerLayout "Simple Layout" (**) |-->Screen "Screen 1" (0) @@ -714,5 +713,12 @@ (**) Keyboard1: CustomKeycodes disabled (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard1" (type: KEYBOARD) (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE) +Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list! +Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/, removing from list! +SetClientVersion: 0 8 +(II) APM registered successfully +(==) NV(0): Write-combining range (0xe0000000,0x8000000) +(==) NV(0): Write-combining range (0xa0000,0x10000) was already clear +(==) RandR enabled Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list! Looking at it more closely, I notice that it's a tad outdated -- I will look into this. I am fairly convinced, however, that it should not be able to cause these sporadic, strange issues? The window manager in use appears to influence the issue. Using Fluxbox, I need to "work hard" to reproduce it, however, I saw it happen a couple of times already ... typically when browsing with Firefox (any more or less recent version) while keeping the machine busy otherwise as well. Last time it was the combination Firefox (visiting ElReg after reading Userfriendly ;) ) + building kdeutils. Running KDE is a safe bet to see it happen -- even if it works for a moment, running kappfinder or something similar immediately breaks it. Hope that helps, Moritz
These are all common symptoms of a video driver hang. Moritz, have a look at bug 5102, bug 4930, bug 4805 or bug 3168 e.g. Some comments in there suggest that some such problems have been fixed in the 6.9/7.0 release candidates for the nv driver. The submitter of this bug hasn't provided required information after more than one year, so resolving as invalid. Campbell, feel free to reopen with the required information.
