Description Ash Goodman 2008-02-11 19:25:05 UTC
When KDE configuration option of hiding desktop icons is enabled compiz crashes with the error message:

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0

After which windows have no decorations and in most cases windows will open but be unresponsive.

It is fixed by disabling the hide desktop icons feature in KDE and running:
sudo rm ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc from konsole, followed by a reboot and then re-enabling compiz fusion

I am running Kubuntu 7.10 with compiz installed from the ubuntu repositories, nVidia 5500 graphics card, newest nVidia driver (restricted) available from the ubuntu repositories all installed via adept package manager. Platform: Dell Inspiron E1505 Intel Core Duo.

Note: I am not sure if I filed this in the right place or not, (should it be filed with KDE?) its my first ever bug report.

It doesn't crash, it just refuses to launch.

It should be filed with KDE. Using desktop icons should _not_ affect window manager selection at all, and even if it does, KDE should give up the WM selection properly.
