Created attachment 14916 [details] xorg.conf nv 2.1.7 - Debian package 1:2.1.7-1. When using DVI-D, my GeForce 6200 (NV44) detects the panel size as "1 x 1", which leads it to believe that all of the available modes are unsuitable. Or this may be a symptom of it being unsure of which CRTC to use. The same card and monitor work fine with a VGA cable. I'm attaching xorg.conf and the two Xorg.0.log files, first with the VGA, second with DVI-D. The device in question is NV(0). I'm happy to test patches.

Well ... everything works beautifully if the DVI cable is plugged in at boot time and the VGA cable is not. When I reported the bug, I had booted the machine with the VGA cable and later switched to a DVI cable, and that is what failed. Apparently the only problem is that the nv driver can't switch the CRTC 0 between VGA and DFP. I'm happy now, so feel free to close this bug if you wish.
Ah yeah, that explains it. For chips prior to to the GeForce 8 series, the driver relies on the VBIOS to set up the display at boot. Switching cables around for pre-G80 is outside the scope of the nv driver. Marking WONTFIX.
