Currently, there is no way for an application (or a toolkit) to detect if a display, running on a RandR 1.2 capable X server (for instance Xorg 7.4 / xserver 1.4.2), is not supporting RandR 1.2 because display driver is not supporting it (like intel driver for old i810 chipset, Nvidia proprietary driver and ATI proprietary driver). This is problematic for applications relying on XRRQueryVersion to handle multi-heads (such as argyllcms), or gtk+ 2.13.x which now favors xrandr 1.2 over xinerama for multi-heads, without any way to fallback.
Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not obviously still valid. Please file a new report if you continue to experience issues with a current server.
