Description Adrian von Bidder 2008-09-08 13:43:11 UTC
Hi,

A funny phenomenon on a MGA550 (DVI + VGA) with two analog monitors.

"Left" is my trusty old 19" Tube.
"Right" is a crappy 17" I picked up somewhere (while crap, it still gives me more screen estate :-)

I'll be attaching
-> xorg.conf/X.org.log worksalmost, which is cobbled together with Google and a LOT of patience.
-> xorg.conf/Xorg.log manpage, which is a modification based on how I understand the xorg.conf manpage to build my ServerLayout/Screen sections.

Both have the same fundamental problem: the left edge of "Left" repeats the right edge of "Right", and the right edge of "Right" repeat the left edge of "Left". In other words: display wraps around somehow. With funny effects on any application, because obviously the window manager is not aware of this happening and so parts of windows overlap each other, but the mouse focus doesn't really reflect this (hard to explain, see the annotated screenshot.) Additionally, there is a gap between the two screens (to reflect the physical gap between the two monitors, perhaps?) of a few pixels. So I can completely hide the mouse pointer, or a very small window! :-)

A note on the configuration: as you see, "Left" should do 1440x1080 (determined by experiment to be optimal in terms of sharpness vs. screen acreage), "Right" is a TFT and has hardware 1280x1024. In the "worksalmost" configuration, these modes are set as I want them and the wraparound issue is the only thing. In the "manpage" config, both monitors only are run at 1280x1024, no idea why.

Machine is Debian (mix etch/lenny). Package versions:
 	xorg 1:7.3+15
	xserver-xorg-core 2:1.4.2-5
	xserver-xorg-video-mga 1:1.9.100.dfsg.1-1
	mga_vid kernel module compiled from mga-vid-source 2.6.24-3
	linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 2.6.26-4 (unmodified Debian pkg)
More data on request.

Grr. Bugzilla doesn't conveniently display the filenames. Soo, files are (in this order) xorg.conf.worksalmost, Xorg.log.worksalmost, xorg.conf.manpage, Xorg.log.manpage. Screenshot is next.

dualhead funky effects demo

Blue circle == gap (it seems to be ca. 120 pixels wide)
Green == left edge of left monitor repeateated.
Red == right edge of right monitor repeated

in both areas (green, red) you can see that the window management obviously doesn't know of this problem and thus we get the opportunity to study of when, exactly, which parts of windows are redrawn.

This is not a KDE effect, I also have XFCE4 on this box and it shows the same effects.

cheers

Uh. I didn't say this: both displays are using analog connection, the TFT doesn't have a DVI input.

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not
obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
