Bug reported to Debian by Stephen Frazier <stevef@doc.state.ok.us>:
when DefaultDepth is not specified in xorg.conf, X starts with depth/fbbpp 24/32, and only the top half of the screen is displayed.  It seems to work fine with depth/fbbpp 24/24.

I think this is fixed by commit 991c88b7542164194be73573e7644164416ea90c in xserver, 24 bpp should now be chosen.
