This is the only bad case reported so far with the latest drm-intel-next.
Maybe the only 2 bad cases, but my problem seems similar. Running 2.6.27 with drm-intel-next from oct 15th merged in. I have to note that when I turn off tiling in my xorg.conf, X seems to start, but I get a blank screen and can not switch back to any vt (might be related to other posts I saw with vaio's?) Here's my dmesg: Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb Linux version 2.6.27-intel3-00187-g130ed6b-dirty (root@gentoo-jteb) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Gentoo 4.3.2 p1.0) ) #7 PREEMPT Tue Oct 14 19:48:11 CEST 2008 Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-provided physical RAM map: Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f800 (usable) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 000000000009f800 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 00000000000d8000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000003f6e0000 (usable) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 000000003f6e0000 - 000000003f6ec000 (ACPI data) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 000000003f6ec000 - 000000003f700000 (ACPI NVS) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 000000003f700000 - 0000000040000000 (reserved) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 00000000fec10000 - 00000000fec20000 (reserved) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 00000000ff800000 - 00000000ffc00000 (reserved) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb BIOS-e820: 00000000fffffc00 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb last_pfn = 0x3f6e0 max_arch_pfn = 0x100000 Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb kernel direct mapping tables up to 3f6e0000 @ 7000-d000 Oct 14 21:56:59 gentoo-jteb DMI 2.3 present. Ok, I found out more. Under display, I have Virtual 2720 1924 so I can do dual screens. Works with 2.4.2 and DRI enabled. Works with DRI disabled in GIT. With DRI enabled, it will lock. With 4 gigs of ram, DRI disabled, it works, but works with 2.4.2 with DRI enabled. With 2 gigs of ram, and no "virtual" setting, I am in X with DRI enabled, 3d is working. I need those other features though before I can use this driver... So... 4 gigs of ram, DRI, virtual setting, works with 2.4.2 There's two problems here.
Also, this board is an Asus P5Q-EM.
If I set in my bios to allocate 32M of ram for video, everything is working, DRI, Virtual screen setting, 4gb of ram, with INTEL-DRM-NEXT and GIT xorg driver. If I set 128M, things lock up. Is any additional info required?
Scratch that last post. I'm using 3gb of a different brand ram, and it's working with 32mb set in bios. 4gb of the corsair (2 sticks of xms2-8500 2048mb) still fails, despite memtest saying it's OK. It's 100% reproducible with the virtual setting, DRI enabled, and 4gb of ram.
X also locks by playing videos in mplayer w/ ogl output, regardless of vsync setting. Killing X doesn't help. Attached GDB.... This is with everything built from GIT, pulled from a few hours ago... 1. I'm also having problems getting X to start with GEM. Using 78d3308fc296d1f960a0b35912ba4178f56a3d6f of drm-intel-next everything worked fine, 2D was stable. Now, using 4b26c78ab2927ab2fda5acb5881b9faa6c354afc, it's broken again. All I get on start is a black background and the standard X cursor. I'm also using an Asus P5Q-EM with 2x2GB RAM.

It's just the standard debian config, the only thing out of the ordinary might be CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y.

I might be missing something here (I'm new to git) but what happened to this commit: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/anholt/drm-intel.git;a=commit;h=78d3308fc296d1f960a0b35912ba4178f56a3d6f It was supposedly the last working version for me, but now these changes doesn't seem to be present?
Current master of drm-intel-next (4b26c78ab2927ab2fda5acb5881b9faa6c354afc) with the agp changes from 78d3308fc296d1f960a0b35912ba4178f56a3d6f works for me. Dylan, can you try it and see it works for you too?
I asked anholt about that patch earlier after I saw your post. He said that the patch was pulled because there were bugs. If one of the intel guys wants me to try it, I will...but you and I literally run into all of the same bugs it seems, it will probably work but I can confirm if one of them wants me to.
(In reply to comment #17) > It's just the standard debian config, the only thing out of the ordinary might > be CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y. > My mistake, it's of course HIGHMEM64G=y which fails. Using HIGHMEM4G=y, or even NOHIGHMEM=y, everything works fine. I'm now using for-airlied, 66647dc60d16fae9f6963fd98b6d9baa1a8dac69.
Eric, is this the same issue on bug#17993? Is the patch there still in for-airlied and drm-intel-next? I'm decreasing severity since there's a good workaround (not enable HIGHMEM64G).
