I built the latest xorg with the gentoo ebuild, the url shows my problem... Please attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log of your failing server. So far there is no information about the card and driver you're using.
I am getting a similar problem with a Powerbook G4 500 MHz with an ATI Raedon Mobility M3 chipset. Bug is with Ubuntu but crossposted here in case it is useful. See https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5889
please reopen if this is still an issue for you with 6.9 or 7.0, preferably attaching your config file and X log.
