PIM (Personal information management http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_information_manager ) has no simple mapping in the spec. It could cover these applications: Addess Books: Office;ContactManagement Calendars and birthdays: Office;Calendar ToDo lists and note pads: Utility;TextEditor or Office;ProjectManagement are nearest fits RSS feed: Network;News is a nearest fit Reminders, alerts, alarms: Office;ProjectManagement is a nearest fit That is why I would like to propose following Category: PIM | Personal Information Management | either Any (as Core) or Office;Network;Graphics;Utility and either RSS | RSS Feed Reader | Network or maybe -Viewer | Tool to view e.g. a graphic or pdf file | Graphics or Office +Viewer | Tool to view e.g. a graphic or pdf file or RSS feed | Graphics;Office or Network The second one would fit to more applications, not only RSS. Note: PIM may be used in two ways: - as part of Categories of some applications to specify detail of application placement in the menu - as an indicator for candidate of a special PIM menu as found on some desktop systems, PDA devices or mobile phones
Regarding RSS: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xdg/2009-January/010117.html has a similar problem. Maybe RSS will be good, but maybe adding generic OnlineService, NetworkService or so may be interesting. Regarding the PIM: Maybe more generic extra key PDA or Mobile or even TouchScreen/FingerTouch (not associated with primary or secondary categories, but just telling that the application is designed for particular mobile device type) as a special key may be more useful instead of PIM. That may cover applications like navigation software intended for PDA.
Created attachment 64045 [details] [review] 0001-Add-Network-Feed-and-Network-NetworkService.patch Thinking again about it, I propose more generic Network;Feed instead of Network;RSS. Also proposing Network;NetworkService for other services not listed elsewhere. I am unsure about PIM, so not adding anything yet.
Thanks, pushed: http://specifications.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-spec-latest.html#category-registry (without the NetworkService part)
