Using 6.8.1-1ubuntu4, the backlight on my IBM T-23 (S3 Inc. SuperSavage IX/C SDR rev 05) never turns off. When I run "xset dpms force off", the screen blanks but the backlight remains on. While the screen is blanked, xset q reports: DPMS (Energy Star): Standby: 0 Suspend: 0 Off: 600 DPMS is Enabled Monitor is Off Note that in my xorg.conf, the driver is "savage", not "s3savage" (Driver/s3savage component).
you need to use xorg cvs. I added backlight control after 6.8.x was released. If cvs give you problems let me know as I have an alternative method you can try. FWIW, the cvs driver also supports dualhead.
Later on I added code that uses the BIOS to switch off the LCD backlight. This is only applied on ProSavage and Twister chips. Should this also be done on SuperSavages?

I'm not sure. I think the register crunching for mx/ix should work on supersavages too. One user confirmed it did, but I've never tested it myself. It does work on mx/ix.
Hi, i have savage mx/ix, with Xorg CVS (12 February 2005). The backlight on my Samsung NV5000 don't working now. But it worked with cvs (10 January 2005)
Whats the status of this bug using a current version of xorg?
It should work. I only have a savage mx/ix to test with, but it works on here and I've gotten word from several others that it works on supersavage as well (xorg cvs HEAD and xorg 7.0). If you have problems with cvs or 7.0, please open a new bug.
For me it's not working. I use gentoo-2006 with xorg-7.0-rc1. When I run "xset dpms force off", the screen blanks but the backlight remains on.
Beware of bug 5665.
The bug 5665 looks a bit different. My laptop can't at all power off lcd.But it's worked with xfree about two jears ago, now i can't reproduse it working :( .With wind$ it's working.
Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.
seems to work fine on my T23. reopen if you are still having problems.
