Description Luigi 2004-12-26 13:12:35 UTC
Since I migrated to xorg-x11 my X server freezes quite often; I didn't find the
reason, but when I use a gecko-based browser the possibility of crash increase
tremendiously.

I tried all -rX of xorg-x11 but the problem persist with both drivers nv and nvidia.

Steps:
- Open a gecko-based browser(Firefox or Epiphany)
- Load a UTF-8 or a page with some textboxes and type something in it or scrool
the page with the mouse wheel..
- Wait random(time)
- The X server freezes: you can move the mouse, but the clicks aren't
recognized, the keyboard is dead (No leds, no ctrl+alt+fX works)

Solutions:
- hardware reboot
- kill X and restart it throw a remote session SSH

Other notes:
- If you restarts X from remote, there is no way to access to virtual consoles
(ctrl+alt+fX) because You'll see a freezed version of the current X session in
every virtual console.

When I restart X from remote, "top" says that X uses 99% of CPU

The URL has more info showing a regression from XFree86 4.3.0 in X.Org 6.7 and
later.

I'm sorry, probably this bug isn't related just to gecko browsers :( Today it is
happened also with Opera.. Probably is something related to mouse wheel, but It
never happened with Nautilus.
Comment 3 Brian Hill 2005-01-02 09:40:30 UTC
I experience the bug also while using the scroll wheel. I think that it has more
to do with NVidia's Drivers Though because I always see messages about the
NVidia Drivers in /var/log/messages after a hard reboot. I don't have the exact
message on hand but if it happens again I'll post it.
Comment 4 Luigi 2005-01-04 08:29:48 UTC
psmouse.c: Wheel Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 3
bytes away

Sometimes I find in dmesg this message, could it be related to this problem?

I dont think the nvidia drivers are to blame for this problem, as me and
countless others experience the exact symptoms without having the nvidia drivers
installed.
Comment 6 Nuno Alexandre 2005-03-19 16:31:52 UTC
Btw, If I use the vesa driver, the hardlocks and freezes are gone.

;)
Comment 7 Michiel de Bruijne 2005-03-20 14:13:45 UTC
A lot of users have this problem, it's been discussed on
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-198023-highlight-nvrm.html (350 messages
and 24924 reads). As you can see in the forums it doesn't matter if you use
firefox or konqueror, ati or nvidia, 2.4 or 2.6 kernel, etc.

Right before the freeze the following message is written in the log;

NVRM: Xid: 13, 0000 02009700 00002597 00001528 004a016e 00400000
Comment 8 marco 2005-03-30 09:21:48 UTC
I think I got the same issue. I've already inserted a bug on the gentoo bugtracker
(http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87266) please have a look there.
Could it be possible that this bug is due to some network issue? I can reproduce it to 100%
bei doing the following:
Start Vmware Booting windowsXP. Access my local home directory by a windows network
share --> xorg freeze.
Comment 9 Erik Andren 2006-03-15 05:32:15 UTC
Has this issue changed with the latest xorg release?
Comment 10 Erik Andren 2006-04-03 00:01:15 UTC
I'm closing this bug due to the lack of inactivity. If the problem persists with
at current version of xorg, please reopen.
