Forwarding this bug from Ubuntu reporter Craig Estep: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/400887 [Problem] After logging in when an external monitor is plugged in, both my laptop display and the external display are blank. If I press fn+f5, both displays start working. I'm decreasing priority to medium since this is not a popular issue, and there's already a workaround -- fn+f5. What does fn+f5 do? Is there a corresponding xrandr command?
>(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section Configured Monitor would you please attach your xorg.conf? and this happen only when you plug in the VGA monitor after system boot up, right? i.e. does everything just work, if you boot with the VGA monitor attached before power on?

When I reported this bug, I was using the 2.6.31-3 kernel. This problem no longer affects me with the 2.6.31-4 kernel, but when I boot the 2.6.31-3 kernel, I still see the problem. Regarding your question, this problem occurs with the external monitor plugged in from before power on. The boot splash, along with gdm both display on the monitor. After I enter my password in gdm, both my internal display and external monitor go blank, until pressing fn+f5.

"This problem no longer affects me with the 2.6.31-4 kernel" - mark as resolved since bug no longer exist in newer kernel.
