A quick suggestion for xcompmgr. It would be nice if it would be possible to have an option to make just menus fade rather than menus AND windows. That way, system resources aren't used to create a possibly undesired effect.
Created attachment 4982 [details] [review] No fade big windows Patch to avoid fading windows bigger than a certain size
The attached patch is very lame, but does the trick to have an usable fading on slow machines. It seems that window type detection is broken, so I wrote this patch as a workaround. Launching xcompmgr with -N will avoid fading windows larger than an area of 360*360. It's an arbitrary number that makes my desktop usable and pretty.
I suggest you send your patch to xorg-devel (assuming it still applies, if not fix it to apply to master first). Once it is reviewed, someone will push it. Feel free to assign this bug to me with an updated/reviewed patch if you need someone to commit it.
Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
