Description Jamie Lavigne 2009-10-20 15:57:29 UTC
After running for a few minutes (amount of time varies, sometimes 5 minutes after login, sometimes an hour), X freezes and becomes unresponsive. Often the mouse pointer still responds to movement but cannot select anything. It is possible to SSH in from a remote machine and see that Xorg is using 100% CPU.

I am not a coder but I will give you all the help I can in resolving this, because this machine is currently unusable. I submitted this bug originally to Ubuntu's lanchpad, and all of the relevant hardware information is attached there: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/450669

Jamie Lavigne, Ubuntu 9.10 reached EOL on April 30, 2011. For more on this, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases .

If this is reproducible in a supported release, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with Ubuntu by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information running the following from a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

Also, please feel free to subscribe me to it.
