Fresh installation of Gentoo 2.6.31 RC6 genkernel on a Tyan dual Athlon XP-1700 mainboard and ATI Radeon 8500 standalone AGP videocard.

Procedure followed is the Gentoo howto at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml.

emerge xorg-server finishes without problems.

This is what's installed:

X.Org X Server 1.6.3.901 (1.6.4 RC 1)
Release Date: 2009-8-25
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.31-gentoo-r6 i686
Current Operating System: Linux localhost 2.6.31-gentoo-r6 #1 SMP Wed Dec 2 17:$
Build Date: 02 December 2009  07:11:42PM

Xorg -configure fails, creating the attached xorg.conf.new. Logfile is attached Xorg.0.log.

make.conf contains the necessary USE flags "X" and "xorg"
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon fbdev glint vesa"

Why are you loading radeon, fglrx, glint, fbdev, and vesa?

Remove everything but radeon and see if it still crashes.

fglrx doesn't even support your 8500 anymore.
