Machine locks up after a few hours – usually in the screen saver. The keyboard and mouse go dead so it is not possible to Ctrl/Alt/F2 to another terminal. It is possible to ssh in from another host to reboot. During the lock-up top shows that X is taking 99.9% CPU. If the machine locks up in the screen saver, top might show gflux taking 99.9% CPU. It is possible to make X crash immediately as follows: 1.use startx to fire up gnome (2.8.2). 2.open a terminal window and start glxgears 3.open a second terminal window and start a second copy of glxgears As soon as the second instance of glxgears is started, X locks up immediately. I am running Slackware 10.0, Kernel 2.6.10, Dropline Gnome 2.8.2 on a dual 1000 MHz PIII, Abit VP6 based machine. This problem occors in both xorg-6.8.2 and xorg-6.8.1. Xorg-6.7 was OK.
Does disabling Render acceleration work around the problem?
I do not experience any lockups if I comment out Load "dri" in xorg.conf but this obviously slows things up. ATI's proprietary driver didn't help either (fglrx_6_8_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm). I could try enabling DRI again and setting Option "no_accel" to "yes" if this would be useful?
(In reply to comment #2) > ATI's proprietary driver didn't help either (fglrx_6_8_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm). That might indicate a hardware issue, but let's rule out software issues first: Please attach X server configuration and log files. > I could try enabling DRI again and setting Option "no_accel" to "yes" if this > would be useful? Please try enabling the DRI and Option "RenderAccel" "off".
"RenderAccel" "off doesn't appear to be an option – I'm using ATI's Version 8.10.19 driver at the moment. I may switch back to the standard Xorg-6.8.2 driver next weekend in which case, I will try this option then. Using the following settings in xorg.conf: # === disable/enable XAA/DRI === Option "no_accel" "yes" Option "no_dri" "no" Results in this in Xorg.0.log: (WW) fglrx(0): ************************************* (WW) fglrx(0): * Acceleration completely disabled! * (WW) fglrx(0): ************************************* My machine is stable but a slug. Dragging a window in Gnome or scrolling down an html page in Mozilla is painfully slow and jerky. Glxgears gives 60 FPS. Using the following settings in xorg.conf: # === disable/enable XAA/DRI === Option "no_accel" "no" Option "no_dri" "yes" Results in this in Xorg.0.log: (WW) fglrx(0): *********************************** (WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization disabled! * (WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) * (WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available * (WW) fglrx(0): *********************************** My machine is stable and quite useable. Dragging a window in Gnome or scrolling down an html page in Mozilla is nice and smooth. Glxgears still only gives 60 FPS. Using the following settings in xorg.conf: # === disable/enable XAA/DRI === Option "no_accel" "no" Option "no_dri" "no" Glxgears gives 1900 FPS but I then experience lockups as described previously.
The component field of this bug report currently says it's about the radeon driver. Please adjust it and/or create another bug report for the other driver.
I can confirm that this this bug does apply to the radeon driver. I was using the radeon driver when I filed the original bug report. After filing the original bug report, I installed the ATI version 8.10.19 driver in order to see if it fixed the lockup problems that I was experiencing – it didn't. I will switch back to the Xorg radeon driver at the weekend and will then try enabling the DRI and and using Option "RenderAccel" "off" as you suggest. I will also attach X server configuration and log files. Thanks for helping with this.
I am now running Slackware 10.1, Kernel 2.6.10, Dropline Gnome 2.10.0, X.org-6.8.2 with the radeon driver. I have enabled DRI and used Option "RenderAccel" "off" as suggested. X no longer hangs immediately when a second instance of glxgears is started but now locks up during normal use (typically after 30 minutes or so). As before, all is well with no DRI. I commented out Option "AGPMode" "4" as suggested, but unfortunately X still locks up as long as DRI is enabled :-( By the way, how do I attach a file?
Created attachment 2800 [details] Similar issue / Radeon 9000 on Tyan MoBo 2460 / SMP / dri issue I see a similar behaviour as described by Steve Roper on my system. Tyan Tiger 2460 MoBo / Radeon 9000 graphics card. OS: SuSE linux 9.3, xorg 6.8.2, kernel 2.6.11-4-SMP (!??). Activating dri causes the xserver to lock after 12 - 18 h. CPU-load 90-99%, no more mouse, no more keyboard. Rechecked the issue with two Sapphire graphics cards. Turn dri off and everything is fine. The xorg file is created by sax2. No entries in the logs. Most of the time it is still possible to remotely login via ssh, but not always. Stopping and restarting X by a cron - job may drastically increase the survival time. Please let me know if I should supply more logfiles etc. Disabling "dri" in the attached xorg.conf makes the system remain stable. Any comments / suggestions are appreciated. Many thanks for all the work!
Experienced the same problem with gentoo's ebuild, either with 6.8.2 or 6.8.9 (both with DRI) and a Radeon 9200 SE. If I disable DRI, it is better (it appears less often), but I suspect Xv to trigger that situation too. With almost everything commented out in modules section, it does not do that (ATM "type1" and "freetype"). The machine looks to hang up, but is usually sshable. If I kill -9 the X server quickly enough (a few seconds), I can usually recover from that situation. After the first lockup, I can Ctrl-Alt-F1, but the console looks very bad (if I death type, I can login and perform actions I want). Maybe something interessant : when X uses 95-100% CPU, udevmonitor endlessly (until I kill X if I can) shows something about /dev/vcs10 (consoles [0-9] are getty-ed) and /dev/vcsa10. If it locks up another time, it will be /dev/vcs11 and /dev/vcsa11. From that point it is usually unrecoverable, as console 12 is for logs. Another thing : sometimes at the boot (after a lock up like that), the video card is not even reognized by the BIOS. I'm far to be a guru, I just hope it can help someone to track down this problem.
This seems to be the same problem I'm experiencing and it's been the bane of my life since April. The crashes only usually occurred every few days but since upgrading to 2.6.14, they've become a lot more frequent so I've been trying even harder to figure out what the hell is wrong. I haven't been able to SSH in so I was very much in the dark about what the cause was. I have disabled DRI and haven't had a crash for nearly 7 hours so I'm fairly certain this is it. Ironically, I found this bug report while looking for something else! This is a Sony Vaio PCG-K195HP and it has a Radeon IGP 345M. I'll gladly give whatever information and do whatever tests are necessary. I just want this problem solved. As a start, it might be worth noting that this always appears three times in the kernel log when starting X but not when DRI is disabled. mtrr: 0xf0000000,0x8000000 overlaps existing 0xf0000000,0x4000000
Disabling DRI did indeed stop the crashing. I have now turned RenderAccel off instead. I assume this will also work. Interestingly, when I did this, the bug I was experiencing in OpenOffice disappeared. http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=48494
After a few days without any x11 freeze... guess what ! That time, I saved what udevmonitor told (Precision : I moved to vcs7 the X server) : UEVENT[1132436224] add@/class/vc/vcs7 UEVENT[1132436224] add@/class/vc/vcsa7 UEVENT[1132436224] remove@/class/vc/vcs7 UEVENT[1132436224] remove@/class/vc/vcsa7 UEVENT[1132436226] add@/class/vc/vcs7 UEVENT[1132436226] add@/class/vc/vcsa7 UEVENT[1132436226] remove@/class/vc/vcs7 UEVENT[1132436226] remove@/class/vc/vcsa7 UDEV [1132436227] remove@/class/vc/vcsa7 UDEV [1132436228] remove@/class/vc/vcs7 And it continues like that, following no obvious pattern. I experienced this problem with both 2.6.12 and 2.6.13 (gentoo-sources). I did some debugging like told here http://wiki.x.org/wiki/DebuggingTheXserver from another box (ssh stills works fine), ended up where no symbols were available (kernel space ?), and "crashed" a few steps after (gdb was complaining about itself and purposing me to save a coredump (of gdb), and I had the very bad reaction to don't save that). If these informations can talk to someone...
Hmmm my machine crashed twice with RenderAccel off. Maybe I do have a different problem. )-: At least I seem to have tracked it down to the DRI module.
My problem seems to have finally been solved in Mesa 6.4.1. Phew.
Does this still happen with current versions of xf86-video-ati and Mesa?
Hi Michel I am currently using Xorg 6.8.2 and Mesa 6.2.1. My xorg.conf file loads Driver "ati" which subsequently loads the radeon driver as follows: (II) Loading sub module "radeon" (II) LoadModule: "radeon" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o (II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 6.8.2, module version = 4.0.1 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7 It is no longer possible to make X crash immediately as follows: 1.use startx to fire up gnome (2.8.2). 2.open a terminal window and start glxgears 3.open a second terminal window and start a second copy of glxgears But it always crashes eventually. If I reboot, start Gnome an then allow random screen savers to run the machine will lock up within 3 or 4 hours – always in a 3D screen saver. As before it is possible to ssh in from another host to reboot. I fitted a huge 12 Volt fan over the heat sink on the graphics card to ensure that the heat sink remains stone cold even during prolonged 3D rendering. This means that my problem cannot be related to the chip locking up at high temperatures. My machine never locks up when I comment out Load "dri" in xorg.conf – even after several days of soak testing running random screensavers. Presumably this means that my problem cannot be BIOS/AGP/hardware related? Regards Steve
Steve, it's hard to debug an issue when you are using versions that are a couple of years old. If its possible please try and see if there are any improvements using a more current version of xorg/ati-driver.
hmmm. Didn't realise I was so out of date :-( I'm running Slackware 10.2. Should I download the X11R6.9.0 tarballs and compile from source? I can give it a shot over the weekend if you like. Could you let me have a shopping list so that I can make sure I pick up the correct versions of all the various components that I will need please? Steve
You could try a DRI binary snapshot, see http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Download#head-55420c59a1c2e9a70f07a6fa02f0d228ffb87b76
Hi Michel I have now upgraded to Xorg 6.9.0 and Mesa 6.4.1. My xorg.conf file loads Driver "ati" which subsequently loads the radeon driver as follows: (II) Loading sub module "radeon" (II) LoadModule: "radeon" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so (II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 6.9.0, module version = 4.0.3 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.8 It is now possible to make X crash immediately by opening up a terminal window and starting three instances of glxgears& (one on top of the other). I could try a DRI binary snapshot next if you like. Steve
OK, I have now upgraded to Xorg 7.0.0 and Mesa 6.5.1. As before, my xorg.conf file loads Driver "ati" which subsequently loads the radeon driver: (II) Loading sub module "radeon" (II) LoadModule: "radeon" (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so (II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 7.0.0, module version = 4.0.3 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.8 Which looks the same as for xorg 6.9.0 (apart from the later version of Mesa). Haven't managed to make X crash yet so I'll start soak testing. Steve
Unfortunately my machine locked up during a 3D screen saver. Not sure how long this took to happen because I left random screen savers running overnight. I would say that the stabilityof Xorg 7.0.0 appears to be the similar to Xorg 6.8.2. Steve
This is a slightly off the wall suggestion but try disabling the "Processor" and "Thermal" ACPI drivers if you have them enabled. That "fixed" my crashing problem though I'd still like to find out exactly why it was happening.
There have been a lot of stability fixes in xf86-video-ati since 7.0.
Thanks for you r suggestions guys. I have tried running a kernel with no APM support and no ACPI support just in case it made a difference but unfortunately in my case it didn't seem to. I understand that it may help some users though, possibly indicating a software/hardware timing race? The latest DRI modules available at http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Download#head-55420c59a1c2e9a70f07a6fa02f0d228ffb87b76 are dated 03-04-2006 and unfortunately the kernel module would not compile. This might be because the module was not designed for the 2.6.16.16 kernel. When a more up-to date snapshot appears I will give it a try and let you know what happens. Steve
Is this the same bug as I reported in Ubuntu's bug tracker: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xfree86/+bug/15219 Radeon 7200 which locks up randomly on 3D apps - tends to work fine for a while and then dies; only on DRI apps; lockup freezes X and possibly other stuff, killing the 3D app everything starts going again. This has been happening for many versions (just had it still happen on 7.0.0) This is also on a Tyan dual Athlon MP board. Dave
I have this same bug, though it is *very* reproducible. See below for the Machine Check Error that locks the kernel. Software: . Debian unstable (amd64 arch) as of 2006-09-14 . This is not really a hardware error. I suspect that the RAM <-> AGP <-> DRI memory interface in the Xorg or kernel driver has a bug in it for SMP hardware and/or the amd64 memory architecture. Thanks for your help and the excellent Xorg product. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. -s
(In reply to comment #29) Please attach (as opposed to paste) a full X server log file. It would be great if you could also try upgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati to experimental and maybe build the DRM from git and see if the problem persists.
I hate to tell you this, but I managed to knock a capacitor off my Radeon 7000 Sunday afternoon. It is dead. I have ordered a Sapphire Radeon 9250 256MB from newegg as a replacement. If I have the same problem, should I file a separate bug (since this is an r200_driver board) or append to this bug? I will follow all your instructions when I receive the board.
