Dear Intel developers,


connecting a Philips 32PFL5404H [1] to the ASUS EeePC 701 4G worked with version 2.8 and maybe even 2.9.0 of the Intel driver. With 2.9.1 it does not work anymore and I get a similar picture as in [2] (different monitor).

I do not use `/etc/X11/ xorg.conf`.

VGA is detected by not assigned a mode? How about "xrandr --output VGA1 --preferred"? You may also try "video=TV1:d" on kernel boot option to see if any difference.

I solved this problem by manually adding the following mode following #17629.

  $ cvt --verbose -r 1920 1080
  $ xrandr --newmode "1920x1080R"  138.50  1920 1968 2000 2080  1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync
  $ xrandr --addmode VGA1 1920x1080R
  $ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080R
  $ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080R --output LVDS1 --off

I hope that is no regression of #17629 because there it was also that the need for reduced blanking was not detected and a quirk was needed. This is the same machine but a different monitor. But in this case it worked in earlier versions (but I only had this output device since 2.8.0 or so).

If the EDID information is wrongly transmitted by the Philips device please tell me and I will contact the Philips.

I attach the Xorg.0.log file again, but it looks like `xrandr` calls do not make it into the log file.

I tried the recent release 2.12 in Debian experimental [1] and this error is still present. The workaround of adding the mode manually worked like last time. Are the EDID information wrong?

`Xorg.0.conf` lists

    (II) intel(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x0.0  148.50  1920 2008 2052 2200  1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz)

while the manual added line is the following.

    xrandr --newmode "1920x1080R"  138.50  1920 1968 2000 2080  1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync

Can a quirk be added? But as said this used to work in version before 2.9.

Unfortunately, since it was working before, I did not safe those logs. I tried the Debian Eee PC live image which is based on Lenny and has xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.3.2-2+lenny6 [2]. I have the same problem with this version.

Do you know any Live image (any distribution) including 2.8? If not I will have to downgrade to the older version [3]. Do the old versions work with the current X stack?

Thank you for your suggestion! Judging from [1] 10.04 (Lucid) includes 2.9.0-1ubuntu2, so I can test this. Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) ships 2.6.3-0ubuntu9 [2], so that is also worth a try.

I looked at the Ubuntu releases page [3] and took the long term release 10.04.4 (Lucid Lynx) listed there elsewhere [4].

First this reply documents how I can test live systems quite easily.

With GRUB 2 you can boot using an ISO file stored on a file system somewhere. Following the guide from Michael Prokop [5] and the Ubuntu Wiki [6] the following has to be entered on the GRUB command line.

        loopback loop (hd0,1)/lucid-desktop-i386.iso
        linux    (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/lucid-desktop-i386.iso
        initrd   (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
        boot

So using the live system of Ubuntu 10.04.4 Lucid Lynx [4] booted as discussed in comment #13 it did not work either.

Wang, I could not see that KMS was used. But I just looked at the Linux kernel ring buffer (`dmesg`).

On IRC ickle helped me out. It has to be something newer. Currently the patches are in the Git repository drm-next. Commits b61b2140 [1], cb21aafe [2] and the others from this pull request/patch collection are needed.

ickle and ohsix summarized the problem as follows on IRC #intel-gfx.

22:26 < ickle> modesetting (including output probing) is a function of the kernel. X just requests the available outputs and modes from the kernel, and mixes in the user added modelines
22:27 < ohsix> PaulePanter: sounds like the whole bug may have been due to reduced blanking, for the mode to be used right it'd have to be where mode setting is done, so in the kernel

I just want to note that I can reproduce the same problem with a LG SL80 TV [1].

So patches should definitely be backported to Linux kernel 3.2. But I could not test them yet.

I asked stable to include these patches. But since they do not work for me, I will ask them to remove them again.

It is strange though, that Windows despite using EDID according to Adam Jackson supposedly gets this right, that means gets a working image on the monitor.

(Due to KMS(?)) this is a DRI issue and not a Xorg issue.

Testing another TV (LG SL80), I had the same problems with, with a Lenovo T60 instead of the ASUS EeePC 701 4G, it worked fine (bug 53544 comment 5) [3]. Therefore the problems seems to be something else and needs further investigation. Please do not commit this patch.

In #intel-gfx on irc.freenode.net ajax suggested, to test it with VESA. Unfortunately I could not test that yet, because I had forgotten to install `xserver-xorg-video-vesa`. But KMS seems to be the culprit indeed. Checking the Debian changelog around the time this issue started to appear [3], KMS was enabled by installing `/etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf` enabling KMS.

Some more information searching the Web and from #intel-gfx.

1. According to Chris Wilson it works with 945GM.

2. Searching the Web, it works out of the box with a BenQ E2200HD with an Eee PC 701, which is the same CPU and GPU as the 701 4G but has more RAM (1 GB) and storagespace (8 GB), which should not matter. The question is, if the BenQ monitor announces that it accepts reduced blanking modes.

3. In the German speaking forum EEE-Forum, the user Chrysler reports the same problem as discussed here with a 32" Samsung monitor [3]. In the end they got it to work by overclocking the CPU from 630 MHz to 900 MHz.

So to summarize.

1. In the Asus Eee PC 701 4G, the chip is at the maximum of its capabilities. (Daniel Vetter: »could be that we're too close to the dotclock limit on these machines«)

2. The question is now, if quirking all flat panels out there not announcing reduced blanking mode in their EDID is feasible option.
