Dear Intel developers, connecting a Philips 32PFL5404H [1] to the ASUS EeePC 701 4G worked with version 2.8 and maybe even 2.9.0 of the Intel driver. With 2.9.1 it does not work anymore and I get a similar picture as in [2] (different monitor). I do not use `/etc/X11/ xorg.conf`. $ xrandr -q -v xrandr program version 1.3.2 Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 480, maximum 4096 x 4096 VGA1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1920x1080 60.0 + 1600x1200 60.0 1280x1024 60.0 1360x768 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 640x480 60.0 LVDS1 connected 800x480+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 800x480 60.0*+ 640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9 720x400 85.0 640x400 85.1 640x350 85.1 TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) The output of `reportbug xserver-xorg-video-intel` including Xorg.0.log` is pasted at the end. (In reply to comment #1) > VGA is detected by not assigned a mode? How about "xrandr --output VGA1 > --preferred"? That did not work either. > You may also try "video=TV1:d" on kernel boot option to see if any difference. That did not help either. TV1 was still shown in `xrandr` as disconnected. Created attachment 33541 [details] Xorg.0.log with video=TV1:d Linux argument and `xrandr` with new mode I solved this problem by manually adding the following mode following #17629. $ cvt --verbose -r 1920 1080 $ xrandr --newmode "1920x1080R" 138.50 1920 1968 2000 2080 1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync $ xrandr --addmode VGA1 1920x1080R $ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080R $ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080R --output LVDS1 --off I hope that is no regression of #17629 because there it was also that the need for reduced blanking was not detected and a quirk was needed. This is the same machine but a different monitor. But in this case it worked in earlier versions (but I only had this output device since 2.8.0 or so). If the EDID information is wrongly transmitted by the Philips device please tell me and I will contact the Philips. I attach the Xorg.0.log file again, but it looks like `xrandr` calls do not make it into the log file. Thanks, Paul

I tried the recent release 2.12 in Debian experimental [1] and this error is still present. The workaround of adding the mode manually worked like last time. Are the EDID information wrong? `Xorg.0.conf` lists (II) intel(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x0.0 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz) while the manual added line is the following. xrandr --newmode "1920x1080R" 138.50 1920 1968 2000 2080 1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync Can a quirk be added? But as said this used to work in version before 2.9. Diffing the log files did not show any differences. Here they are again. $ xrandr -q --verbose Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 480, maximum 4096 x 4096 VGA1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) Identifier: 0x41 Timestamp: 62404 Subpixel: unknown Clones: CRTCs: 0 1 Transform: 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 filter: EDID: 00ffffffffffff00410c000001010101 2d120103088048782aa981a3544c9926 0f4a4c2108008180a940010101010101 010101010101023a801871382d40582c 450000d05200001e662150b051001b30 4070360076f23100001e000000fd003c 4b1e5111000a202020202020000000fc 005048494c4950535f4654560a200001 1920x1080 (0x44) 148.5MHz +HSync +VSync +preferred h: width 1920 start 2008 end 2052 total 2200 skew 0 clock 67.5KHz v: height 1080 start 1084 end 1089 total 1125 clock 60.0Hz 1600x1200 (0x45) 162.0MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 1600 start 1664 end 1856 total 2160 skew 0 clock 75.0KHz v: height 1200 start 1201 end 1204 total 1250 clock 60.0Hz 1280x1024 (0x46) 108.0MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 1280 start 1328 end 1440 total 1688 skew 0 clock 64.0KHz v: height 1024 start 1025 end 1028 total 1066 clock 60.0Hz 1360x768 (0x47) 85.5MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 1360 start 1424 end 1536 total 1792 skew 0 clock 47.7KHz v: height 768 start 771 end 777 total 795 clock 60.0Hz 1024x768 (0x48) 65.0MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 1024 start 1048 end 1184 total 1344 skew 0 clock 48.4KHz v: height 768 start 771 end 777 total 806 clock 60.0Hz 800x600 (0x49) 40.0MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 800 start 840 end 968 total 1056 skew 0 clock 37.9KHz v: height 600 start 601 end 605 total 628 clock 60.3Hz 640x480 (0x4a) 25.2MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 656 end 752 total 800 skew 0 clock 31.5KHz v: height 480 start 490 end 492 total 525 clock 60.0Hz LVDS1 connected 800x480+0+0 (0x4b) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm Identifier: 0x42 Timestamp: 62404 Subpixel: horizontal rgb Clones: CRTC: 1 CRTCs: 1 Transform: 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 filter: BACKLIGHT: 15 (0x0000000f) range: (0,15) Backlight: 15 (0x0000000f) range: (0,15) scaling mode: Full supported: None Full Center Full aspect 800x480 (0x4b) 32.0MHz *current +preferred h: width 800 start 840 end 968 total 1056 skew 0 clock 30.3KHz v: height 480 start 481 end 484 total 505 clock 60.0Hz 640x480 (0x4c) 36.0MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 696 end 752 total 832 skew 0 clock 43.3KHz v: height 480 start 481 end 484 total 509 clock 85.0Hz 640x480 (0x4d) 31.5MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 664 end 704 total 832 skew 0 clock 37.9KHz v: height 480 start 489 end 492 total 520 clock 72.8Hz 640x480 (0x4e) 31.5MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 656 end 720 total 840 skew 0 clock 37.5KHz v: height 480 start 481 end 484 total 500 clock 75.0Hz 640x480 (0x4f) 25.2MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 656 end 752 total 800 skew 0 clock 31.5KHz v: height 480 start 490 end 492 total 525 clock 59.9Hz 720x400 (0x50) 35.5MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 720 start 756 end 828 total 936 skew 0 clock 37.9KHz v: height 400 start 401 end 404 total 446 clock 85.0Hz 640x400 (0x51) 31.5MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 640 start 672 end 736 total 832 skew 0 clock 37.9KHz v: height 400 start 401 end 404 total 445 clock 85.1Hz 640x350 (0x52) 31.5MHz +HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 672 end 736 total 832 skew 0 clock 37.9KHz v: height 350 start 382 end 385 total 445 clock 85.1Hz TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) Identifier: 0x43 Timestamp: 62404 Subpixel: unknown Clones: CRTCs: 0 1 Transform: 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 filter: bottom margin: 37 (0x00000025) range: (0,100) right margin: 46 (0x0000002e) range: (0,100) top margin: 36 (0x00000024) range: (0,100) left margin: 54 (0x00000036) range: (0,100) mode: NTSC-M supported: NTSC-M NTSC-443 NTSC-J PAL-M PAL-N PAL 480p@59.94Hz 480p@60Hz 576p 720p@60Hz 720p@59.94Hz 720p@50Hz 1080i@50Hz 1080i@60Hz 1080i@59.94H What other information do you need to fix this problem? Paul, I may have missed it, but can you attach an Xorg.0.log from 2.8 as well and an xrandr with that driver. I want to check what modes the working version actually used to find the discrepancy. Thanks.

I want to check what modes the working version > actually used to find the discrepancy. Thanks. Unfortunately, since it was working before, I did not safe those logs. I tried the Debian Eee PC live image which is based on Lenny and has xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.3.2-2+lenny6 [2]. I have the same problem with this version. Do you know any Live image (any distribution) including 2.8? If not I will have to downgrade to the older version [3]. Do the old versions work with the current X stack? You may try ubuntu 10.04 live with KMS enabled by default.
(In reply to comment #11) > You may try ubuntu 10.04 live with KMS enabled by default. Thank you for your suggestion! Judging from [1] 10.04 (Lucid) includes 2.9.0-1ubuntu2, so I can test this. Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) ships 2.6.3-0ubuntu9 [2], so that is also worth a try. I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am sorry. First this reply documents how I can test live systems quite easily. With GRUB 2 you can boot using an ISO file stored on a file system somewhere. Following the guide from Michael Prokop [5] and the Ubuntu Wiki [6] the following has to be entered on the GRUB command line. loopback loop (hd0,1)/lucid-desktop-i386.iso linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/lucid-desktop-i386.iso initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz boot Please find the log files in the next comment #13. > [1] http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/xserver-xorg-video-intel > [2] http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/xserver-xorg-video-intel [3] http://releases.ubuntu.com/ [4] http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lucid/daily-live/20120214.2/lucid-desktop-i386.iso [5] http://michael-prokop.at/blog/2009/05/25/boot-an-iso-via-grub2/ [6] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
Hmm, didn't Adam Jackson just add a set of reduced blanking modes to the EDID parser & mode generator in the kernel?
(In reply to comment #14) > Hmm, didn't Adam Jackson just add a set of reduced blanking modes to the EDID > parser & mode generator in the kernel? Meaning you want me to test Linux 3.4-rc7 with any DDX Intel driver version? If yes, is there any live system providing these versions already?
(In reply to comment #13) […] > Please find the log files in the next comment #13. That of course was supposed to be comment #16. So using the live system of Ubuntu 10.04.4 Lucid Lynx [4] booted as discussed in comment #13 it did not work either. Wang, I could not see that KMS was used. A similar patch as done in [1] commit bc42aabc6a01b92b0f961d65671564e0e1cd7592 Author: Adam Jackson <ajax@redhat.com> Date: Wed May 23 16:26:54 2012 -0400 drm/edid/quirks: ViewSonic VA2026w Entirely new class of fail for this one. The detailed timings are for normal CVT but the monitor really wanted CVT-R. Bugzilla: http://bugzilla.redhat/com/516471 Signed-off-by: Adam Jackson <ajax@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com> is needed. I sent a patch to the dri-devel list [2]. It is strange though, that Windows despite using EDID according to Adam Jackson supposedly gets this right, that means gets a working image on the monitor. (Due to KMS(?)) this is a DRI issue and not a Xorg issue.

Testing another TV (LG SL80), I had the same problems with, with a Lenovo T60 instead of the ASUS EeePC 701 4G, it worked fine (bug 53544 comment 5) [3]. Therefore the problems seems to be something else and needs further investigation. Please do not commit this patch. > [1] http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commit;h=bc42aabc6a01b92b0f961d65671564e0e1cd7592 > [2] http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/dri-devel/2012-August/026469.html [3] https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53544#c5
(In reply to comment #0) […] > connecting a Philips 32PFL5404H [1] to the ASUS EeePC 701 4G worked with > version 2.8 and maybe even 2.9.0 of the Intel driver. With 2.9.1 it does not > work anymore and I get a similar picture as in [2] (different monitor). In #intel-gfx on irc.freenode.net ajax suggested, to test it with VESA. Unfortunately I could not test that yet, because I had forgotten to install `xserver-xorg-video-vesa`. But KMS seems to be the culprit indeed. Checking the Debian changelog around the time this issue started to appear [3], KMS was enabled by installing `/etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf` enabling KMS. xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.9.1-2) unstable; urgency=low * Upload to unstable. -- Julien Cristau <jcristau@debian.org> Thu, 07 Jan 2010 20:53:45 +0000 xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.9.1-1+exp1) experimental; urgency=low [ Julien Cristau ] * Enable kernel mode setting by default on linux (closes: #555906). Some more information searching the Web and from #intel-gfx. 1. According to Chris Wilson it works with 945GM. 2. Searching the Web, it works out of the box with a BenQ E2200HD with an Eee PC 701, which is the same CPU and GPU as the 701 4G but has more RAM (1 GB) and storagespace (8 GB), which should not matter. The question is, if the BenQ monitor announces that it accepts reduced blanking modes. 3. In the German speaking forum EEE-Forum, the user Chrysler reports the same problem as discussed here with a 32" Samsung monitor [3]. In the end they got it to work by overclocking the CPU from 630 MHz to 900 MHz. [1] http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php?/topic/59453-external-display-at-1920x1080-from-an-eee-pc-701/page__view__findpost__p__532483 [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC#Specifications [3] http://www.eee-forum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=427
So to summarize. 1. In the Asus Eee PC 701 4G, the chip is at the maximum of its capabilities. (Daniel Vetter: »could be that we're too close to the dotclock limit on these machines«) 2. The question is now, if quirking all flat panels out there not announcing reduced blanking mode in their EDID is feasible option.
