The GTK-Qt Engine forces a uniform background color on Emacs that it fails to recognize,  
leading to a rather unusable result.  (See the above URL for a screenshot.) 
 
My (rather amateur) attempts at overriding that color in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 or ~/.emacs.d/gtkrc went  
unnoticed by the engine.

This should now be fixed in CVS.  Feel free to reopen if the problem still 
exists :)
