Description Victor NOEL 2010-04-16 05:56:59 UTC
Hello,

I am using the kernel 2.6.33 with xorg 1.8, mesa 7.8.1, libdrm 2.4.20 and xf86-video-ati 6.13.0 (on Archlinux and the xorg18 repo that packages all of this except kernel which is in the core repo).

I enabled KMS and it makes X freeze when I use Blender.

I already reported the bug to archlinux bugtracker and they redirected me to you.

You can find the original bug report with detailed errors, logs and different tests I made at the following url:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19092

If you need more details or want me to do specific tests I am ready.

I am currently running with current stable (in Arch) version of xorg (1.7.6), mesa (7.7.1) on 2.6.33 and these problems don't appear.

Also, 2 other points with the xorg18 repo:
 * Disabling KMS results in ugly artefacts when scrolling, it is somewhat unusable, that is not the case when KMS is disabled with current xorg (there was other artefacts with KDE but it was usable)
 * Scrolling is sometimes very slow in firefox when KMS is enabled.

Thanks

Hello,

The bug @archlinux was closed, it seems that Blender does not crash any more with xorg 1.8.1.902, mesa 7.8.2, kernel 2.6.34 and kms.

There was still some artefacts in X when KMS was disabled.

If any other crash happen (since there was some random ones), I will report it here.

Thanks

Hello,

I am coming back on this because this problem still exists!

It seems that it only happens when I am using two screens, I have been using my laptop for 2 months by itself without problems, and now that I come back using my dock + extra screen, I get freezes again.

I am using:
kernel 2.6.34.1
xorg-server 1.8.1.902
xf86-video-ati 6.13.1
mesa 7.8.2
libdrm 2.4.21

KMS is enabled (and if not, I still get the ugly artifacts, not usable at all!).

It happens some times, when I am closing windows for example, the screen just freeze then turn black.

I attach the kernel.log and xorg.log for the session before the crash.

Thanks

Is this still an issue with a newer mesa or kernel?
Comment 9 Victor NOEL 2010-10-20 00:21:39 UTC
Hi,

It seems the crash itself stopped,

The bug can be closed I think, Blender seems to work nicely.

I opened bug #30297 that is not exactly the same, don't know if it is linked…

Thank you!
