I have Fedora 2 with several 2.6 kernels, 2.6.8-1.521 in particular, with 
last xorg RPM update xorg-x11-6.7.0-11.
I have a 865GBF Intel motherboard with onboard video with the i810 driver.
But since monitor image is too dark, I tried with no success to correct
its gamma with xgamma, and with xort.conf file, with no success.
Just nothing happens with either method.
There is no error in Xorg.0.log file. When correcting with xorg.conf file,
say, to 3.0, Xorg.0.log shows the change:
  (==) I810(0): Using gamma correction (3.0, 3.0, 3.0)
But after that line, another one appears:
  (II) I810(0): Gamma: 2.26
Always the same line, no mather what changes I make: Gamma 2.26.

You might want to try my driver available at

http://www.fairlite.demon.co.uk/intel.html

and see if that helps. But make sure you've upgraded to X.Org 6.8.x first.

It didn't help. All (don't) work as before.

I got your driver, installed in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o
and /usr/X11R6/lib/Server/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o-ori (is this ok?),
after I upgraded to xorg-6-8-1 and reboot. Now I have installed this xorg
packages:

Well done!! Xgamma is working nice now.
I just substituted /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o 
by http://www.fairlite.demon.co.uk/i810_drv.o.
