After using gedit <filename> & using ssh over X-Win32 from Windows Professional x64 to RedHat machine, the following error message is received, and no window with the text gedit text editor comes up:

Error: Cairo does not yet support the requested image format:
Depth: 8
Alpha mask: 0x00000000
Red   mask: 0x00000000
Green mask: 0x00000000
Blue  mask: 0x00000000

While this does not fix the issue, you might be able to work around this by configuring your X server to not use a pseudocolor 8bit visual. 256 colors are not used that often anymore.

Humm, but 1.6 and forward should support pseudo color.

Several months ago, this was working fine. Without any changes I am aware of, it seems to have just started happening.
