think there are several issues here: 
1) we should either figure out which server is sending us broken XML and tell them to fix it, or accept broken XML; 

2) every callback is getting the reason the stream disconnected as the reason it failed, which is arguably inaccurate

3) crashes at the end

Thanks, this is probably this NEWS item:

  · Make the XML parser more tolerant of recoverable errors in the incoming
    stream. In particular, this fixes an issue with illegal namespaces in some
    contacts' PEP nodes (sjoerd)
