Description hansioux 2010-10-15 22:57:29 UTC
Hi,

I have an older ATi card,

VGA compatible controller : ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

The 3D support from X11 was working fine since Ubuntu 8.10.

since a week after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10, a new update broke the 3D support. Now i can't get any kind of 3D going.

My driver is

-Display-
Resolution : 1680x1050 pixels
Vendor : The X.Org Foundation
Version : 1.9.0.901
-Monitors-
Monitor 0 : 1680x1050 pixels

-OpenGL-
Vendor : X.Org R300 Project
Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on RV370
Version : 2.1 Mesa 7.10-devel
Direct Rendering : Yes

I am a mainstream user, and I don't really know if the bug is caused by Mesa, but I have exhausted my options. I have another computer with a
newer nVidia GPU that had the same problem after an upgrade. It was fixed with a reinstall and avoiding xorg updates.

Could you be more specific about what is wrong with your system?

The "close minimize maximize" bar is missing on all windows. After manually switching to some other drivers the bar returned but compiz still can not be started.

Compiz can not be started. If i try, it will say it's looking for drivers. After few mode switches into the driver that makes the windows bar disappear, it will say Desktop Effects can not be enabled.

3D graphics such as screen savers and the 3D glxgears test from Systems->Administration->System Testings would start, but the whole system hangs up after 30 seconds (for any 3D graphics).

So i have to run my machine without top window bar, without compiz and without screensavers.

If i shut down glxgears before the systems hangs up, the in system report, this is what is said about my compiz abilities.

Ubuntu 10.10 only ships with the classic driver, but you are using the gallium driver... A "classic" example of using the xorg-edgers PPA without reading its instructions maybe?

actually i didn't begin using the x-org-edgers PPA until it happened. that's what's fixed my Windows Title bars.

By the way, same thing has happened to my machine with nVidia, which wasn't running the xorg-edgers PPA at all. And on the OMG!Uuntu forum, other people have confirmed that this has happened to them.

Since this can be a Ubuntu specific issue, I'd suggest you file a bug on the Ubuntu bug tracker on this (use "ubuntu-bug mesa"). Then we can take it back here once the basic bug triaging is done.

This seems to be a Ubuntu-specific issue with their xorg-edgers PPA, not our bug.
