How to reproduce: $ cd /usr/share/X11/locale $ grep -R '" ".*nobreakspace' . It shows only pt_BR.UTF-8/Compose. In that file, the space character is placed inside the double-quotes, instead of the actual nobreakspace char. This should be fixed. Other */Compose files have either the raw (invisible) character in there, or the octal "\240" value. Maybe all files should use the same convention, in order to prevent confusion. Verified in Gentoo/Linux, with x11-libs/libX11-1.3.4 (xorg version 7.4) I'm not sure if I submitted this bug to the right product/component.
Compose files come from libX11, not xkb-config - reassigning.
