I have a Compaq Presario R4000 running Ubuntu 5.04 and XOrg 6.8.2, using a Radeon XPress 200M. Soon after the GDM login screen, the system completely hangs. I cannot even ssh into it. I did not have this problem when using the VGA driver (which only is capable of 320x200 on this system), nor when using the older agpgart / VESA driver combination available in other OSes (Ubuntu 4.10 and Fedora Core 3). Specifically, it hangs when, at the gdm login screen, I hit the radio button to choose another session; or, soon after gnome login, during the splashscreen phase, or, in failsafe mode, as soon as I launch another XWindows application. (I can login in failsafe mode, but the xterm window does not render properly.)
Created attachment 2678 [details] Output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log Here is a dump of Xorg.0.log. There is no additional output at the time of the hang.
Can you try again with xorg from cvs or try adding this line to the device section of your config: chipid 0x5460
