Description Hajo E. 2011-01-13 08:30:16 UTC
Currently, there are seven menu entries in the operating system for LibreOffice Base, LibreOffice Calc, LibreOffice Draw, LibreOffice Impress, LibreOffice Math, LibreOffice Writer and LibreOffice itself.
My suggestion is to remove all entries but "LibreOffice".

This helps to increase simplicity and also usability: A new user does not have to guess what "Impress" really means. (I have seen several people having problems to get which menu entry is for what. I have also seen people creating tables with Writer because they thought "Calc" is a math tool.) If there is only one entry "LibreOffice", people see words like "Presentation", "Database", "Spreadsheet" and immediately know what they mean instead of having to choose from correct application from cryptic names.

Did you notice the tooltips for the menu entries?
Comment 2 Hajo E. 2011-01-13 09:08:17 UTC
Thank you for your answer. Of course i know about the tooltips, but i don't see why it is necessary to have entries for all seven applications in the menu when one would be enough. Maybe there is also some usability testing i'm not aware of.

Well, the point with the tooltips is that they presumably make it more obvious what a "Calc" or an "Impress" is to people who don't know.

I can assure you that if we would drop the separate submenu with Calc, Writer, Base etc, and have just a single LibreOffce menu entry that starts the Start Center, there would be lots of people complaining about that, too... Personally I don't really care which way it is, I will leave it to the usability experts.

This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.

Thanks for new idea, but I think it should be slightly different:
1) unuseful items can deleted from menu manually after install
2) system administrator can create bat or bash file to automate deleting unuseful items
3) user or system administrator can rename Calc to Spreadsheet or Excel
4) on many operating systems explanation about program placed in parenthes after name of program
5) into install file of Libre Office can placed options to disable creating additional menu items
6) in comparison: MSOffice creates about 10 menu items
